Originally described by Friedrich Ritter, the species is classified under the genus Cipocereus. The specific epithet pleurocarpus derives from the Greek 'pleura' (rib/side) and 'karpos' (fruit), referring to the characteristic ribbed structure of its seed pods 2.
This species is endemic to Minas Gerais, Brazil. It inhabits the high-altitude rocky savannahs known as 'campos rupestres', thriving under seasonally dry tropical climates on nutrient-poor, quartzitic sandy substrates 3.
Cipocereus pleurocarpus exhibits erect, moderately branched columnar stems. The epiderm develops a beautiful waxy, bluish-grey coating over time. Stems are deeply ribbed, adorned with felted areoles bearing yellowish-brown, sharp needles. The flowers are nocturnal, tubular, and pale white to cream.
In cultivation, it requires maximum light exposure and highly porous, mineral-rich soil. During the active spring and summer growth phase, water thoroughly only when the substrate is completely dry. In winter, keep the plant dry in a cool environment 2.
