Cochemiea angelensis (syn. Mammillaria angelensis) is a highly ornamental cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family, known for its dense spine coverage and beautiful striped flowers 1.
Originally described under the genus Mammillaria, molecular studies and phylogenetic revisions have integrated this species into the expanded genus Cochemiea 2. The specific epithet 'angelensis' refers to its type locality, Isla Ángel de la Guarda.
This species is endemic to Mexico, primarily restricted to Ángel de la Guarda Island in the Gulf of California, Baja California 1. It inhabits hyper-arid rocky slopes, crevices of volcanic rock, and desert scrublands.
The stems are globose to cylindrical, often offsetting from the base to form clumps. Areoles carry numerous needle-like radial spines and distinctive, usually hooked central spines that are darker in color 2. Its blossoms are white to cream or pale pink, exhibiting a prominent dark pink to purplish midstripe on each petal.
It demands maximum sunlight and extremely porous mineral-based potting media. Watering should follow the 'soak and dry' method, where the soil is allowed to completely dry out between watering sessions. Winter dormancy requires cool and dry conditions.
