Sancayo Cactus
Corryocactus brevistylus is a massive, shrubby to tree-like columnar cactus belonging to the Cactaceae family. Locally known as 'Sancayo' or 'Sanku', this species is highly valued for its extremely sour, refreshing, and vitamin-C-rich fruits 1.
It was originally described in 1913 by Joseph Nelson Rose as Cereus brevistylus and later transferred to the genus Corryocactus by Britton & Rose. The genus name honors Thomas Corry, a railway engineer who supported botanical explorations 2.
Native to the dry slopes of the Andes in southern Peru and northern Chile, it thrives at high elevations between 2,000 and 3,600 meters. It is perfectly adapted to hyper-arid desert environments and intense solar radiation 1.
Reaching heights of 3 to 5 meters, it branches from the base. The dark green stems are 10-15 cm in diameter with 6 to 8 prominent ribs. Large, woolly areoles bear formidable yellowish spines up to 20 cm long. Large, diurnal, yellow funnelform flowers appear near the stem tips, followed by spiny, edible globose fruits 2.
This cactus requires full sun exposure and a highly mineral, gritty substrate. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch during spring and summer, keeping it completely dry in winter. It can tolerate light frost if kept dry 1.
