Disocactus × coopermannii is an exquisite epiphytic hybrid cactus belonging to the family Cactaceae 1. Renowned in the horticultural world for its pendulous habit and large, showy scarlet-to-orange flowers, it is commonly cultivated as a hanging basket plant.
This taxon is a horticultural hybrid resulting from the cross between Disocactus phyllanthoides and Disocactus speciosus 1. It is often referred to under the synonym Epiphyllum × coopermannii. The genus name Disocactus derives from the Greek dis (twice), referring to the symmetry of some species' floral structures.
While the parent species are native to the humid cloud forests of Mexico and Central America where they grow on tree trunks and rocky crevices 2, this hybrid is primarily a product of cultivation, adapted to greenhouse and indoor environments globally.
The plant features flattened, leaf-like green stems with scalloped margins and virtually no spines. The magnificent funnel-shaped flowers, reaching up to 15 cm in diameter, open in late spring and exhibit glowing shades of crimson, pink, and orange 2.
It thrives in bright, indirect light, mimicking the canopy-filtered sunlight of its ancestral habitats. A well-draining, peat-rich, porous potting mix is essential. Regular watering is preferred during the active growth phase, provided excess water drains instantly 1.
Waterlogging is the most critical issue, leading to rapid root and stem rot. Placing the plant in harsh, direct summer sun will scorch the flat stems. Low air humidity during bud development can cause premature bud drop.
