Belonging to the prominent genus Echinocactus, this species occupies a unique position in succulent collections. While some historical classifications have debated its affinity with neighboring South American genera, current botanical records maintain its distinct robust morphological identity 2.
This cactus is native to western South America, specifically recorded in regions of Colombia and Peru 1. It thrives in semi-arid, high-elevation rocky valleys where the substrate is highly mineralized, providing rapid drainage after brief, torrential downpours.
The stem is initially globose, transitioning to a stout cylindrical shape with age. It features prominent, sharp ribs lined with large areoles. From these, extremely stiff, curved, and thick central and radial spines emerge. Mature specimens develop a woolly crown at the apex from which yellow blossoms arise.
