Historically grouped within the broad genus Echinocactus, modern botanical consensus connects this name with the unique South American leafy-cushion cacti of the genus Maihuenia (particularly Maihuenia patagonica), characterized by persistent, fleshy, leaf-like appendages denoted by the epithet "foliosus".
Originally documented by early botanists Gillies and Salm-Dyck, the species was historically placed in Echinocactus due to the broad classification of globose, spiny cacti during the 19th century 2. The descendants and allied forms of this species originate from the harsh, cold, and windswept alpine steppes of Patagonia, spanning Chile and Argentina 2. They thrive in rocky, highly permeable volcanic soils at high elevations, surviving extreme temperature fluctuations.
It exhibits a low-growing, cushion-forming habit, forming dense mounds over time. Unlike typical desert cacti, it bears small, persistent, fleshy green cylindrical leaves along its spiny stems. Rigid, whitish-to-yellowish central spines emerge from the areoles, and it produces large, pale yellow or cream-colored cup-shaped flowers.
