Although classified under the genus Echinocactus, some historical registers draw links to Ferocactus or Stenocactus. The epithet "tribolacanthus" refers to its three-pronged or robust spine arrangement.
While exact distribution data is limited, it is believed to originate from the arid and semi-arid highlands of Mexico, thriving on limestone slopes 1. It has adapted to withstand intense solar radiation and minimal rainfall.
