While the genus Echinofossulocactus is frequently synonymized with Stenocactus by some modern taxonomists, the historic name remains highly popular among collectors and specialists 2. The specific epithet 'ignotus-venosus' suggests a dark, vein-like rib structure and an historically obscure origin.
Native to the high-altitude, semi-arid regions of central Mexico, this cactus thrives on rocky slopes, limestone outcroppings, and gravelly soils 1. It is highly adapted to withstand long periods of drought under intense sunlight.
The stem is solitary, globose to shortly cylindrical, covered in numerous thin, wavy, and tightly packed ribs. Central spines are flattened and direct upwards to shade the plant body, while small bell-shaped flowers of pale pink or white with darker midstripes emerge from the apex.
It requires excellent drainage and a high mineral substrate to prevent root rot. Watering should be done carefully during the growing season and suspended during the cold winter dormancy.
