Echinonyctanthus monstrosus is a fascinating, historically recognized cactus taxon, now taxonomically classified within the genus Echinopsis 1. Characterized by its monstrose growth habit, this plant exhibits an asymmetrical, distorted, and highly sculptural stem structure that makes it highly prized among succulent collectors.
The genus Echinonyctanthus was erected by Charles Lemaire in 1839 but was later merged into Echinopsis 2. The epithet 'monstrosus' refers to the genetic mutation causing the plant's growth points to duplicate randomly, resulting in a knobby, distorted growth pattern rather than the typical ribbed cylinder of columnar cacti.
The ancestral species of this genus are native to South America, spanning rocky outcrops and semi-arid grasslands of Argentina, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil 1. However, the monstrose cultivar forms are largely maintained and propagated in cultivation due to their unique aesthetic appeal.
This plant lacks the typical geometric symmetry of standard cacti. Instead, it forms a multi-headed, bumpy, and irregular green mass. Short, greyish spines sprout from randomly distributed areoles along its undulating ridges. Large, nocturnal white flowers may occasionally appear from mature stems.
It thrives in porous, well-draining mineral soil with bright, indirect sunlight. Because of its complex, folded structure, standing water in the crevices can easily cause rot, so a strict dry-out schedule is essential between waterings 2.
