Duvall's Cactus
Echinopsis × duvallii is a highly sought-after hybrid cactus taxon within the family Cactaceae. Known for its columnar to globular growth habit, it is particularly celebrated for its large, nocturnal, funnel-shaped flowers that display brilliant colorations.
The taxon arose from hybridization events, either natural or horticultural, within the diverse genus Echinopsis 1. The '×' symbol in its scientific name denotes its hybrid status, while 'duvallii' honors the botanist or breeder who first stabilized or popularized this particular form.
As a hybrid cultivar, Echinopsis × duvallii does not have a native wild distribution range. However, its parent species originate from the arid, rocky Andean slopes of South America, primarily Bolivia and Argentina 2. It shares their environmental preference for well-drained soils and distinct wet-dry seasonal cycles.
The stem is green, ribbed, and features evenly spaced areoles bearing small to medium-sized spines. The showy flowers sprout from the sides of the stems, showcasing spectacular shades of white, pink, or red during late spring and summer.
It thrives in very porous, mineral-rich soils. Water thoroughly during the active growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil mix to dry out completely between waterings. Provide bright, filtered sunlight to encourage robust growth and flower bud initiation.
Overwatering is the most critical threat, leading to root rot and systemic collapse. Insufficient light results in weak, stretched growth (etiolation) and inhibits flower production.
