Echinopsis sucrensis is a perennial succulent subshrub in the family Cactaceae, native to the arid mountainous regions of Bolivia 1. It is highly appreciated by cactus enthusiasts for its striking flowers and rugged appearance.
Named after the historic city of Sucre in Bolivia, where the type specimen was documented, this species is classified under the diverse genus Echinopsis 2. It is closely allied with the Lobivia group in classical horticultural taxonomy.
This species is restricted to the Chuquisaca department of Bolivia, typically growing at altitudes of 2000 to 2800 meters above sea level 1. It thrives in dry, rocky shrublands and cliff crevices where it tolerates extreme daily temperature fluctuations.
The plant has a globose to shortly cylindrical, ribbed stem that often clumps from the base. It is covered in robust, grayish-brown spines growing from prominent areoles. Its nocturnal or diurnal flowers are relatively large, funnel-shaped, and usually white or pale pink.
In cultivation, it demands maximum direct or filtered sunlight and a highly mineral, fast-draining substrate. Watering should follow the soak-and-dry method during spring and summer. The plant requires a dry, cold winter rest to stimulate blooming in the subsequent season.
The most prevalent issue is root rot triggered by overwatering, especially during winter dormancy 2. Inadequate light exposure also leads to weak, stretched growth known as etiolation.
