Belonging to the Cactaceae family, this species has been historically placed under Trichocereus and Lobivia. The specific epithet tarijensis refers to the Tarija department in Bolivia, where it was first documented 1.
This species is native to southern Bolivia and northwestern Argentina 2. It thrives at high elevations, typically between 2,000 to 4,000 meters above sea level, inhabiting dry shrublands, rocky slopes, and montane grasslands with intense solar radiation and significant day-night temperature fluctuations.
Echinopsis tarijensis forms a columnar tree that can reach up to 5 meters in height. The stems are robust, measuring up to 45 cm in diameter, and feature numerous ribs armed with stout, golden-brown to grey spines. It produces beautiful pink, red, or white flowers near the stem apices during the late spring.
