Echinopsis torrefluminensis is a columnar, subshrubby cactus species native to the arid valleys of Bolivia. Known for its robust ribbed stems and striking nocturnal white flowers, this species is highly valued by succulent collectors worldwide.
Belonging to the diverse Echinopsis genus of the Cactaceae family, this species was historically described based on its unique habitat location and growth form 1. The specific epithet references the tower-like upright growth and the river basins of its native range.
This cactus is native to Western South America, particularly restricted to the arid and semi-arid valleys of Bolivia 2. It thrives in dry shrublands and desert biomes, often found growing on rocky slopes and gravelly soils under intense sunlight.
Echinopsis torrefluminensis features semi-columnar, multi-branched grey-green stems with well-defined ribs. The areoles bear prominent, sharp spines ranging from grey to pale brown. During late spring and summer, it produces large, funnel-shaped white flowers that typically open at dusk.
In cultivation, it requires a very porous, mineral-based potting substrate with exceptional drainage. It prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial direct sun. Watering should follow the 'soak and dry' method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
