Belonging to the genus Frailea, this species was named in honor of the German cactus expert and explorer Jörg Piltz. It stands out within its genus due to its specific rib structure, appressed spine formation, and characteristic skin coloration 1.
This species is native to Southern South America, specifically endemic to parts of Paraguay 2. It thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes, growing in rocky outcrops, sandy crevices, and under the sparse shade of deciduous shrubs.
The stem is globose to flattened, exhibiting dark green, coppery, or deep purple hues when grown under optimal light. The small areoles bear short, fine, comb-like spines. It produces beautiful sulfur-yellow flowers that are often cleistogamous, setting seed without even opening.
Frailea piltzii requires an open, mineral-rich, extremely free-draining substrate. It benefits from bright, filtered light and moderate watering during its active summer growth, followed by a dry and cool winter rest period.
