Four-Spined Harrisia
Harrisia tetracantha is a distinctive, arborescent or shrubby columnar cactus belonging to the family Cactaceae. It is highly valued among collectors for its impressive nocturnal white flowers and sculptural growth habit.
Originally described as Cereus tetracanthus by Carl Salm-Dyck, the species was later reassigned to the genus Harrisia 1. The specific epithet tetracantha translates from Greek as "four-spined", pointing to the typical number of prominent spines found in its areoles 2.
This species is native to the seasonally dry tropical valleys of Bolivia. It thrives on rocky slopes, dry shrublands, and deciduous forests at moderate to high altitudes 1.
The plant develops branched, erect, greyish-green columnar stems reaching up to 3 meters in height. The ribs are prominent, carrying woolly areoles with sharp, rigid spines. During the summer, it bears large, trumpet-shaped white flowers that open at night and are followed by globose, fleshy fruits.
Harrisia tetracantha prefers a very porous, mineral-rich potting mix with excellent drainage. It requires generous watering during the active summer growing season, which must be strictly reduced in winter. Bright, filtered sunlight or high indirect light produces the best growth.
Overwatering is the most critical threat to this cactus, especially when coupled with heavy clay soils or pots lacking drainage holes, which quickly leads to root rot. Exposure to freezing temperatures while wet will also cause irreparable damage.
