Leocereus bahiensis is a slender, semi-shrubby cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. Known for its scandent or scrambling growth habit, this unique species is highly valued among collectors for its delicate stems and nocturnal blossoms, thriving in rocky and arid conditions 1.
Belonging to the genus Leocereus, this species was formally described by botanists Britton and Rose in 1913. The specific epithet 'bahiensis' honors the state of Bahia in Brazil, where the species is abundantly documented. It is occasionally referenced under its synonym, Cereus bahiensis 2.
This species is native to northeastern and southeastern Brazil, spanning regions such as Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Pernambuco. It is well-adapted to the 'Caatinga' biome, characterized by seasonally dry tropical forests, where it grows among quartzitic rocks and sandy soils 1.
Leocereus bahiensis features cylindrical, thin stems that can reach up to 2 meters in length with a diameter of only 1 to 2 cm. The small areoles bear numerous bristly, needle-like spines. It produces nocturnal, tubular, white to cream-colored flowers designed to attract nocturnal pollinators 2.
In cultivation, it requires an extremely porous, well-draining mineral soil mix. While it tolerates bright light, it prefers filtered sunlight over harsh, direct afternoon sun. Water thoroughly only when the substrate has dried out completely, and keep dry during cold winter spells.
The most prevalent issue is root rot caused by overwatering or compacted soil. Insufficient light exposure leads to etiolation, causing the slender stems to stretch abnormally and lose their structural integrity.
