Loxanthocereus peculiaris is a distinctive cactus species native to the arid habitats of Peru, belonging to the Cactaceae family 1. Exhibiting a succulent subshrub lifeform, this species attracts enthusiast collectors due to its architectural growth and colorful tubular flowers.
The genus Loxanthocereus has occasionally been merged into Cleistocactus by some taxonomists 2. However, distinct floral structures and genetic lineages support its independent generic status. The specific epithet peculiaris refers to its unique, uncommon growth form among its relatives.
This species is restricted to Western South America, primarily within the lower Andean slopes and coastal deserts of Peru 1. It thrives in hyper-arid to semi-arid ecosystems, successfully colonizing steep, rocky, and mineral-heavy soils with excellent drainage.
Loxanthocereus peculiaris produces upright to decumbent cylindrical stems that branch from the base. The ribs are adorned with closely spaced, bristly spined areoles. The tubular flowers, typically in shades of red or orange, are adapted to attract hummingbird pollinators 2.
In cultivation, it requires bright, indirect sunlight or partially filtered sun. Its potting medium must be mostly mineral-based. Water thoroughly only when the soil has dried out completely, and reduce watering drastically during the winter months.
The most frequent failure in cultivating this cactus is overwatering combined with poorly draining soil, which triggers root rot. Insufficient air circulation in high-humidity areas can also induce fungal diseases.
