White Woolly Mammillaria
Mammillaria albilanata is a beautiful globose to short-cylindrical succulent subshrub belonging to the Cactaceae family 1. It is highly prized among succulent enthusiasts for its dense, woolly white appearance and bright pink flowers.
Within the genus Mammillaria, the species epithet "albilanata" is derived from the Latin words "albus" (white) and "lanata" (woolly) 2. This directly references the characteristic woolly felt found in the plant's axils and aeroles.
This species is native to southern and central Mexico (including Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chiapas) and parts of Guatemala 1. It thrives in seasonally dry tropical biomes, typically growing on steep limestone cliffs, rocky slopes, and deciduous forest clearings.
The stem is solitary or slowly offsetting, reaching up to 15 cm in height. It is covered in fine, white radial spines and dense wool. During late spring and summer, it produces a ring of small, funnel-shaped, pink to deep carmine-red flowers near the crown 3.
It prefers bright, filtered sunlight and excellent air circulation. The potting medium must be highly porous and mineral-based. Water thoroughly only when the soil is completely dry, and suspend watering during the cold winter dormancy 2.
