Powder Puff Cactus
Mammillaria bocasana, commonly known as the Powder Puff Cactus, Snowball Cactus, or Pincushion Cactus, is a charming and popular species of flowering plant in the cactus family (Cactaceae) native to central Mexico . This small, globular cactus is highly prized by collectors for its distinctive appearance, characterized by soft, dense white spines that give it a fluffy, powder-puff-like look.
Typically solitary but occasionally forming clumps, Mammillaria bocasana features a spherical or short-cylindrical stem, usually no more than 6-10 cm (2.4-4 inches) in diameter. Its surface is covered with numerous tubercles, from which radiate soft, white, hair-like radial spines, often numbering around 30-50 per areole. A distinguishing feature is the presence of one to several central spines, one of which is often hooked, adding to its unique texture. Native to central Mexico, specifically found in the states of Querétaro, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Durango, Coahuila, and Tamaulipas. It thrives in arid or semi-arid scrublands, typically on calcareous or sandy soils. It generally avoids high altitudes and volcanic substrates.
