Circumtexta Pincushion Cactus
Mammillaria circumtexta is a distinct and highly collectible member of the Cactaceae family, belonging to the species-rich genus Mammillaria 1. It is valued by succulent collectors for its dense, symmetrical spination.
The species name 'circumtexta' is derived from Latin, meaning 'woven around' or 'encircled', referring to the elegant, spiral arrangement of its radial and central spines around the stem 2.
This species is native to Mexico, growing mainly in semi-arid environments on limestone cliffs and rocky slopes 1. In its wild habitat, it adapts to prolonged droughts, often growing under the light shade of desert scrub.
It features a globose to shortly cylindrical stem, mostly solitary but sometimes clustering from the base as it matures. The stem is covered in conical tubercles. Areoles bear dense radial spines and 1-4 central spines that wrap closely around the body. Small, funnel-shaped flowers, cream to pale yellow in color, form a beautiful ring near the apex during spring.
In cultivation, Mammillaria circumtexta requires a very gritty, porous soil mix with excellent drainage. Water thoroughly when the soil is completely dry during the active growing season, and suspend watering in winter 2. Bright, indirect sunlight is key to maintaining its compact shape.
Overwatering, especially during the cold winter dormancy, is the primary cause of root rot. Lack of sufficient sunlight will cause etiolation, causing the cactus to stretch and lose its beautiful form.
