Mammillaria dichotoma is a distinctive and highly sought-after cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. It is characterized by its fascinating growth pattern of dichotomous branching, where the growing tip splits into two equal heads 1.
The genus Mammillaria is defined by its tubercle-bearing stems. The specific epithet "dichotoma" refers to the characteristic fork-like division of the stem, a feature that distinguishes it from many solitary species within the genus 2.
This species is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico. It typically thrives on rocky limestone hillsides, gravelly plains, and within crevices where drainage is exceptionally rapid and nutrient levels are low 1.
The stem is globose to short cylindrical, covered in prominent tubercles. The spines are radial, fine, ranging from white to pale yellow, dense enough to shade the stem. During late spring, small, delicate cream to light pink flowers form a crown around the growing apex 2.
