Mammillaria heteracentra is a highly sought-after, globose to cylindrical cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. It is highly appreciated by succulent enthusiasts for its distinct tuberculate body and geometric aesthetic.
Scientifically described as Mammillaria heteracentra, the specific epithet derives from the Greek 'heteros' (different or variable) and Latin 'centra' (center/spine), referring to the variable central spine structure 1. The genus Mammillaria is defined by its characteristic nipple-like tubercles.
Native to the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico, this species typically grows at high elevations, nestled in volcanic rock crevices or limestone gravel 2. It has evolved to survive long periods of drought under intense sunlight.
The stem is usually solitary but may clump from the base as it matures. The tubercles are prominent and woolly at the axils. Its most defining feature is the variation in color, length, and strength of its central and radial spines 1. The flowers appear in a ring near the crown, exhibiting beautiful shades of pink, cream, or pale yellow.
In cultivation, it requires an extremely porous, mineral-rich substrate. Watering should be deep but infrequent, allowing the soil to dry out completely. During winter dormancy, it should be kept dry and cool to encourage spring flowering.
Overwatering and using heavy, organic-rich soil are the most common causes of root rot. Insufficient light will lead to etiolation, causing the cactus to stretch and lose its compact shape.
