Mammillaria micracantha is a rare and highly sought-after miniature cactus belonging to the prominent genus Mammillaria within the Cactaceae family 1. Known for its tiny size and dense network of micro-spines, it is a perfect candidate for small-space succulent collections.
Historically documented by classical botanists such as Augustin Pyramus de Candolle, the specific epithet "micracantha" is derived from the Greek words "micros" (small) and "acantha" (spine) 2. This directly highlights the extraordinarily fine and short radial spines clustered on its tubercles.
This species is native to the semi-arid highland zones of Mexico. It typically grows nestled in volcanic rock crevices, gravelly slopes, and limestone outcrops where water drains away instantly after rainfall 1.
The stem is globose to shortly cylindrical, rich green, and covered in tightly spiraling tubercles. The radial spines are hair-like, white to pale yellow, framing the body of the cactus. In late spring, small, bell-shaped flowers in shades of cream and soft pink emerge near the crown 2.
