Mammillaria nicholsonii is a perennial succulent species belonging to the highly diverse genus Mammillaria within the Cactaceae family, appreciated by collectors for its attractive spine patterns 1.
Originally described as Mammillaria nicholsonii, this taxon is sometimes classified by taxonomists as a synonym or local form under the broader Mammillaria petterssonii complex 2. The generic name refers to the prominent nipple-like tubercles (mammillae) on the stem.
Native to the semi-arid regions of Mexico, this cactus grows on rocky, volcanic slopes and limestone outcrops. It is adapted to high drainage soils and often finds shelter under scrub vegetation to shield itself from extreme midday sun 1.
The stem is solitary, globose to short cylindrical, occasionally offsetting from the base with age to form small clumps. It features distinct tubercles tipped with neat clusters of stiff radial and central spines, which present pinkish-brown to yellowish hues. Small, bell-shaped flowers of pale pink or cream color appear in a ring near the crown during spring.
