This species was described by Rogozinski and Appenzeller. Taxonomically, it shares close affinities and ongoing scientific discussions regarding its status as a distinct species or a regional form within the Mammillaria rekoi complex 2. The specific epithet 'zepnickii' honors dedicated cactus researchers.
Endemic to the arid regions of Mexico, this species is typically found growing in rocky crevices, steep slopes, and gravelly soils with very low organic content, surviving under intense solar radiation 1.
