Miqueliopuntia
Miqueliopuntia miquelii is a unique, shrubby cactus species endemic to the coastal deserts of northern Chile 1. Characterized by its erect, cylindrical, heavily-spined stems, it is the sole representative of the monotypic genus Miqueliopuntia, making it a highly prized specimen among collectors.
Originally described as Opuntia miquelii by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber in 1840, the species was later transferred to its own genus, Miqueliopuntia, by Alexander Borissovitch Doweld in 1980 2. The genus name honors the prominent Dutch botanist Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel.
This species is native to the Atacama and Coquimbo regions of northern Chile 1. It thrives in hyper-arid desert biomes and dry shrublands, primarily growing on rocky hillsides and sandy plains where it relies on coastal fog (camanchaca) for moisture.
Miqueliopuntia miquelii forms dense, multi-branched shrubs up to 1.5 meters tall and 3 meters wide. The stems are cylindrical, divided into prominent tubercles, and covered in gray-green epidermis. Areoles are large, bearing numerous long, needle-like spines. Flowers are pale pink to white and bloom near the stem tips in summer 2.
In cultivation, this species requires moderate experience. Mimicking its hyper-arid natural habitat is crucial. It demands maximum sunlight, outstanding ventilation, and a strictly mineral, low-organic soil medium.
The most frequent mistakes are overwatering and using compact soils, which rapidly cause root rot. Inadequate light levels during winter or summer will lead to thin, weak, and etiolated growth.
