Jussieu's Prickly Pear
Opuntia jussieui is a rare and intriguing member of the Cactaceae family, characterized by its jointed, flattened pads. This resilient succulent is highly valued by collectors for its architectural form and high tolerance to drought.
Named in honor of the renowned French botanist Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, this species belongs to the diverse genus Opuntia 1. Despite its horticultural appeal, it remains a relatively lesser-known species within scientific literature, often grouped with other high-altitude prickly pears.
This cactus is native to the dry, high-altitude Andean regions of South America, primarily spanning parts of Argentina and Bolivia 2. It thrives in rocky, nutrient-poor soils on exposed mountain slopes, where it is subjected to intense sunlight, rapid temperature drops, and minimal precipitation.
The plant grows in segments of fleshy, oval pads known as cladodes. The surface is adorned with aeroles that bear both fine, irritating micro-spines (glochids) and stouter, defensive spines. During late spring and summer, it produces vibrant yellow to orange cup-shaped flowers.
Opuntia jussieui requires full sun and extremely well-draining soil. Water should be applied only when the substrate is completely dry to prevent root rot. During the winter dormancy period, watering should be reduced to an absolute minimum.
Overwatering and using heavy, clay-rich potting soil are the most frequent mistakes. Insufficient light exposure will lead to etiolation, causing the pads to stretch, lose their natural robust shape, and weaken structurally.
