The plant features flattened, obovate jointed stems (cladodes) that display a glaucous blue-green or matte green hue. Areoles contain irritating glochids and occasionally carry robust, pale spines. During late spring, it produces attractive yellow flowers with central reddish-orange rings, followed by fleshy purplish-red fruits.
