White-flowered Acanthocalycium
Acanthocalycium leucanthum is a distinctive and highly resilient member of the Cactaceae family. Previously classified under Echinopsis leucantha, this species is well-known for its large, tubular white flowers and prominent, curved spine structure 1.
Originally described by Salm-Dyck in 1837, recent molecular phylogenetic studies have reinstated it into the genus Acanthocalycium 2. The specific epithet 'leucanthum' is derived from Greek 'leukos' (white) and 'anthos' (flower), directly referring to its blooms.
It is endemic to western and northwestern Argentina, particularly in San Juan, Mendoza, Salta, and La Rioja provinces. It thrives in arid plains, dry shrublands, and rocky slopes at elevations up to 1000 meters above sea level 1.
This cactus is typically solitary, with a cylindrical stem reaching up to 30 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter. It features 12 to 14 prominent ribs. The areoles bear stiff, slightly curved grey-brown spines. The beautiful, slightly fragrant white flowers emerge near the stem tips.
It prefers bright, direct sunlight with excellent air circulation. The potting medium must be highly mineral-based with very low organic content. Watering should only be performed when the soil is completely dry.
Overwatering and poor drainage are the primary causes of root rot. Insufficient light leads to etiolation, causing the cactus to stretch and weaken.
