Ariocarpus × nelissae is an extremely rare and highly prized natural hybrid within the iconic Ariocarpus genus of the family Cactaceae 1. Characterized by its geophytic habit and absence of traditional spines, this cactus mimics limestone rock formations.
The plant is a recognized natural or horticultural hybrid involving Ariocarpus scaphirostris and Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus 2. The genus name Ariocarpus is derived from the Greek meaning 'oak-like fruit', and the epithet nelissae honors notable collectors in botanical research.
Found in restricted populations in the semi-arid regions of the Chihuahuan Desert, Mexico 3. It grows embedded in rocky limestone flats, where it is often level with the ground surface, rendering it nearly invisible when not in flower.
This cactus possesses a massive, turnip-like taproot that serves as water storage. The top part consists of flat, rosette-forming tubercles of a dusty grayish-green color. During the autumn blooming season, it produces exquisite magenta to deep pink flowers.
Considered a challenging species in cultivation. It requires an exclusively mineral-based substrate with excellent drainage. Watering should be extremely conservative and restricted strictly to the active growth period, with total dry conditions in winter.
Cultivating this hybrid in soil rich in humus or organic peat is a fatal mistake. Frequent watering, lack of direct airflow, or moisture during the winter dormant stage will cause the main root system to rot instantly.
