Aylostera juckeri (synonym: Rebutia juckeri) is a charming, small-growing, and highly decorative succulent subshrub belonging to the Cactaceae family 1. It is highly prized by collectors for its clustering growth habit and its profusion of brilliant reddish-orange blossoms.
Originally discovered in the highland regions of Bolivia, the species was named in honor of Ernst Jucker, a dedicated cactus researcher 1. Modern molecular studies have re-established the genus Aylostera as distinct from Rebutia, housing this resilient species 2.
Native to Bolivia, it thrives in dry shrublands and rocky mountainous slopes at high elevations 1. In these harsh environments, it grows nestled among gravel and grasses, showing immense resilience to high daily temperature fluctuations.
The plant features globose to short cylindrical light-green stems that freely offset from the base to form dense clusters. The bodies are densely covered with short, bristly, pale whitish to yellowish spines. During spring and early summer, eye-catching, funnel-shaped fiery orange-red flowers emerge around the base 2.
This cactus prefers bright, filtered sunlight and requires highly porous, mineral-based soils with excellent drainage. Water only when the potting medium has dried out completely. During winter dormancy, keep the plant dry and in a cool environment to encourage flower bud formation.
Overwatering and the use of heavy, organic-rich soils are the main causes of root rot. Lack of a cool winter dormancy period will drastically reduce or prevent flowering in the subsequent season.
