Candelabra Cactus
Browningia candelaris is an extraordinary, tree-like cactus species native to the hyper-arid deserts of southern Peru and northern Chile 1. Commonly referred to as the 'Candelabra Cactus' due to its characteristic branched silhouette, older specimens exhibit a unique morphology where the lower trunk is completely bare of spines, contrasting with the heavily spined upper branches.
This species was originally described as Cereus candelaris in 1833. It was later placed in the genus Browningia by Britton and Rose, honoring W.E. Browning, director of the Instituto Inglés in Santiago, Chile 2.
It occurs naturally in southern Peru and northern Chile, specifically on the extremely dry slopes of the western Andes at elevations between 1,000 and 3,000 meters 1. Inhabiting areas of near-zero rainfall, it relies heavily on coastal fog condensation (known as camanchaca) to survive.
This cactus can reach heights of 5 to 6 meters. The thick main trunk of mature specimens loses its spines, developing a smooth, woody yellowish-brown bark. The upper section branches out like a candelabra, bearing heavily armed stems with long, brown-to-yellow spines. Its nocturnal flowers are white to pale pink.
Browningia candelaris is rare in cultivation due to its extremely slow growth rate and specific demands. It requires full, direct sun, excellent ventilation, and a strictly mineral-based soil mix.
Overwatering and exposure to winter cold combined with high humidity are the leading causes of root rot, which quickly destroys the plant.
