Historically associated with related columnar genera, modern phylogenetic studies place this species firmly within the Cephalocereus genus 1. This species is native to Mexico, particularly found in the dry shrublands and deciduous forests of states like Oaxaca, Guerrero, Jalisco, and Michoacán 1. It thrives on rocky slopes under intense sunlight, enduring prolonged droughts.
