Cereus × colvillii is a rare and historic hybrid cactus belonging to the family Cactaceae 1. Known for its columnar growth habit and prominent ribs, this plant is highly prized among succulent collectors for its robust nature and classic architectural form.
Positioned within the genus Cereus, this taxon represents a hybrid of horticultural origin dating back to early botanical collections 2. The specific epithet honors historical figures in British horticulture, and the hybrid sign (×) denotes its cross-bred parentage, which remains tied to early garden records.
As a hybrid cultivar, Cereus × colvillii has no native wild habitat. Its parental species originate from the arid and semi-arid regions of South America, including Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay, while this hybrid was established in European glasshouses 1.
It features erect, columnar stems with a bluish-green to dull green epidermis. The stems are divided into sharp ribs adorned with neat areoles that bear short, greyish to brownish spines. With age, the plant may branch from the base, creating a multi-stemmed specimen.
This hybrid thrives in full sun and well-ventilated spaces. During the active growing season in spring and summer, it requires thorough watering only after the substrate has dried out completely. In winter, watering should be suspended to allow a dry dormancy period.
Overwatering and using heavy, poorly draining soils are the primary causes of root rot. Keeping the plant in a cold, damp, and stagnant atmosphere during winter will easily lead to fungal infections.
