Cereus duledevantii is a rare and lesser-known columnar cactus species in the family Cactaceae. Known mainly among specialized collectors, it features a classic upright growth form with excellent drought tolerance.
The genus Cereus encompasses many large columnar cacti native to South America. Cereus duledevantii is represented in taxonomic databases with limited official records, leaving its full status under Data Deficient (DD) classification 1. It shares key anatomical features with mainstream Cereus species.
While its precise locality data is sparse, like its relatives, it is assumed to have originated in the arid, rocky, and semi-desert biomes of South America 2. It is highly adapted to extreme heat, rocky soils, and long dry spells.
This cactus develops an upright, green to blue-green columnar stem. It possesses prominent ribs adorned with woolly areoles and sharp, brownish-grey spines. The nocturnal flowers are typically large, funnel-shaped, white, and highly fragrant.
In cultivation, it is quite hardy. It demands full sun exposure and a highly porous, mineral-based cactus mix. Watering should be deep but infrequent, allowing the substrate to dry completely between cycles. During winter, watering must be halted.
The most prevalent issue is root rot caused by overwatering or poorly draining soil. Additionally, insufficient light leads to etiolation, where the plant grows unnaturally thin and weak.
