Cereus glaucus is a stunning, blue-green columnar cactus native to South America. It is highly valued among collectors for its striking glaucous stems and majestic nocturnal blooms 1. This species is well-adapted to seasonally dry tropical biomes, displaying excellent drought tolerance.
Belonging to the family Cactaceae, Cereus glaucus was historically described alongside other blue-stemmed species 2. Its specific epithet glaucus refers to the characteristic powdery blue-grey coating on its stems, which protects the plant from intense solar radiation.
This cactus is native to the coastal dunes (restinga) and dry shrublands of Brazil 1. It thrives in sandy, nutrient-poor soils under intense sunlight, co-existing with drought-resistant scrub vegetation.
The stems are erect, segmented, and branch from the base, reaching heights of up to 3-5 meters in maturity. They exhibit 5 to 8 deep ribs armed with brown or greyish spines. During late summer, large, nocturnal white flowers open for a single night, attracting nocturnal pollinators like moths and bats 2.
In cultivation, it requires direct sun and a highly porous gritty mix. Watering should follow the 'soak and dry' method, allowing the substrate to dry completely between cycles. During winter, it must be kept dry and protected from frost.
Overwatering and poor ventilation are the most frequent causes of root rot and fungal infections. Inadequate light leads to etiolation, causing the stems to become thin, weak, and lose their vibrant blue color.
