Classified under the genus Cereus, the specific epithet linnaei honors the famous naturalist Carl Linnaeus 2. Although historically cataloged under various synonyms, it is recognized today for its distinct morphological lineage within the columnar cacti groups.
While specific distribution data is scarce, this species is native to the arid and semi-arid regions of South America, typically growing on rocky slopes, dry scrublands, and well-drained terrains 1.
Cereus linnaei produces cylindrical, ribbed stems that branch out over time. The epidermis is vibrant green when young, maturing to a dusty grayish-green. Its small areoles bear few, relatively short spines. In summer, it produces large, nocturnal white flowers designed to attract nocturnal pollinators.
In cultivation, it thrives under bright indirect sunlight, with some tolerance for direct morning or late afternoon sun. Watering should only be done when the substrate is completely dry. Overwintering must be done in dry conditions with temperatures above 5°C 2.
Overwatering and poor soil drainage are the most common causes of plant decline, leading to root rot. Additionally, placing the plant in dark corners without adequate airflow often results in fungal issues and weak, etiolated growth.
