Cereus polyachaetus is a columnar, rare, and highly collectible cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. Known for its erect growth habit and dense, hair-like spine clusters, it thrives on rocky outcrops and arid shrublands in its native range.
Classified under the genus Cereus within the Cactaceae family, the specific epithet "polyachaetus" is derived from the Greek roots poly (many) and chaete (bristle/spine), directly referring to its heavily armed, bristly areoles 1. While some taxonomic revisions associate this taxon with Coleocephalocereus or Cipocereus, it remains recognized within the broader Cereus complex 2.
This species is native to South America, specifically endemic to the state of Minas Gerais in eastern Brazil. It typically colonizes quartzite rocky fields, shallow soils, and high-altitude caatinga vegetation zones 2.
The stems are upright, columnar, and range from deep green to glaucous blue-green. Prominent ribs run vertically along the stems, bearing closely spaced areoles. From these areoles arise numerous, dense, yellowish to brownish-grey, thin spines that partially cover the epidermis. It produces nocturnal, tubular white to cream-colored flowers.
It demands highly porous, sandy, and grit-rich soil mixes to prevent moisture retention. Full sun exposure or very bright indirect light is critical for maintaining compact growth and vibrant spine coloration. Water thoroughly during the active growing season (spring and summer) only after the soil has completely dried, and keep almost dry in winter.
The most frequent mistake is overwatering during the winter dormancy period and using heavy, poorly draining clay soils, which inevitably lead to root rot 1. Insufficient lighting causes etiolation, where the stem becomes thin, pale, and structurally weak.
