Cereus procumbens is a fascinating, low-growing, clustering cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family 1. In modern botanical classification, it is widely recognized as a synonym of Echinocereus pentalophus, commonly known as the Ladyfinger Cactus.
Originally described by George Engelmann, the species name Cereus procumbens highlights its growth habit 2. The specific epithet 'procumbens' is Latin for 'falling forward' or 'lying along the ground', directly referencing its prostrate, creeping stems.
This cactus is native to South-Central USA (particularly Texas) and Northern Mexico 1. It thrives in arid scrublands, rocky limestone hillsides, and gravelly slopes where it often grows under the light shade of desert shrubs.
