Cereus purpureopilosus is a rare and highly sought-after columnar cactus within the Cactaceae family. Distinguished by the purple-pinkish felt-like wool on its areoles, this species forms striking columns that add architectural structure to any succulent collection.
Scientifically described as Cereus purpureopilosus, its specific epithet refers to the unique purple woolly hairs found around the young areoles and developing flower buds 1. It shares the classic columnar habit, deep ribbing, and nocturnal blooming characteristics of the Cereus genus.
This species is native to Southern South America, specifically northeastern Argentina including provinces like Entre Ríos, Chaco, and Santa Fe 2. It thrives in semi-arid woodlands, rocky outcroppings, and dry shrublands where soil drainage is exceptional.
The stems are erect, cylindrical, and light green to grayish-green, featuring prominent vertical ribs. The areoles are spaced along the ribs, bearing sharp, grayish-brown spines surrounded by distinctive purple-tinted wool. Its nocturnal flowers are large, white with greenish-purple outer tepals, designed for moth pollination.
