Classified under the genus Cereus, the species' taxonomical status has been subject to discussions among botanists 1. The specific epithet tenuissimus means 'very thin' or 'slender' in Latin, directly describing the plant's characteristic fine branching pattern.
Its native range is poorly documented but is generally believed to lie within the semi-arid, rocky regions of South America 2. In its natural habitat, it grows in sheltered microclimates, often shaded by larger desert shrubs.
This cactus produces cylindrical, extremely thin stems of a light green hue. The areoles carry small, needle-like, relatively soft spines. Under optimal conditions, it can produce nocturnal, fragrant white flowers that open for just one night.
