Epiphyllum hookeri, commonly known as Hooker's orchid cactus, is a striking epiphytic cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family. Renowned for its nocturnal, fragrant, dinner-plate-sized white flowers and long, flattened, leaf-like stems, this species is highly valued in tropical horticulture and as an elegant hanging houseplant 1.
Named in honor of the eminent botanist Sir William Jackson Hooker, the species belongs to the genus Epiphyllum, which literally translates to 'upon the leaf', referring to the flowers arising from the leaf-like stems. It has previously been treated under various synonyms, including subspecies of Epiphyllum phyllanthus 2.
This species is native to a broad range encompassing southern Mexico, Central America, parts of the Caribbean, and northern South America. It thrives as an epiphyte in wet tropical biomes, growing high on forest trees where it receives dappled sunlight and high humidity 1.
The stems are segmented, flat, and thin with wavy margins, functioning as leaves. The spectacular nocturnal flowers can reach up to 20 cm in length, featuring a long greenish tube, pure white spreading petals, and numerous delicate, pale yellow stamens that attract night-pollinating moths.
Unlike desert cacti, E. hookeri requires a moisture-retentive yet extremely well-draining potting medium, high humidity, and filtered bright light. Temperatures should ideally remain above 10°C, as it is highly frost-sensitive 2.
The most prevalent issue is root rot due to heavy, waterlogged soils. Insufficient humidity or dark locations can prevent flowering and lead to weak, spindly stem growth.
