Eriosyce caliginiphila is an extremely rare, highly specialized cactus species endemic to the hyper-arid coastal cliffs of northern Chile. Its specific epithet translates to "fog-loving," reflecting its reliance on coastal fog 1.
Classified within the genus Eriosyce, specifically under the subgenus Thelocephala, this species exhibits unique geophytic characteristics adapted to one of the driest places on Earth 2.
This species is restricted to a very narrow coastal strip in the Antofagasta region of the Atacama Desert, Chile 1. It grows on rocky slopes where rainfall is virtually non-existent, depending entirely on the thick morning fog known locally as "Camanchaca."
It is a small, solitary cactus with a globose to flattened, dark grayish-green or brownish stem. Much of the plant body remains level with or just below the soil surface, supported by a massive, fleshy taproot 2. The funnel-form flowers emerge at the apex, displaying pale yellow to reddish-pink hues.
Eriosyce caliginiphila is considered a challenging species in cultivation. It requires a strictly mineral-based, porous substrate consisting of pumice, lava rock, and coarse sand. Watering must be done with extreme caution, and the plant must remain completely dry during winter at temperatures not dropping below 5°C 2.
Using standard peat-based potting soils and watering during winter dormancy are the main causes of rapid root rot. Lack of strong direct sunlight also leads to unnatural elongation (etiolation).
