Lymanbensonia brevispina is a rare and intriguing epiphytic cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. Unlike typical desert cacti, this species has adapted to survive in humid, shady forest canopies 1. It is highly sought after by collectors of exotic tropical cacti due to its unique growth habit and delicate features.
The genus Lymanbensonia was named in honor of the prominent American botanist Lyman Benson. Taxonomic revisions and molecular studies helped distinguish this group of forest-dwelling cacti from related genera like Pfeiffera or Lepismium 2. The specific epithet brevispina translates from Latin as "short spines," directly describing the tiny, inconspicuous spines on its stems.
This species is native to the wet tropical forests of Western South America, particularly in Peru and Ecuador 1. It grows as an epiphyte on tree branches where organic debris accumulates, benefiting from high air circulation and dappled sunlight. It thrives in high-humidity microclimates found in montane cloud forests.
Lymanbensonia brevispina features segmented, pendulous or semi-erect green stems. The stems are flattened or slightly ribbed, carrying small areoles along the margins. The spines are very short, fine, and barely noticeable. During its blooming season, it produces elegant, small tubular flowers, typically white, cream, or pale pink, which emerge from the stem margins.
In cultivation, this plant requires conditions that mimic its natural forest canopy habitat. It prefers bright, indirect or filtered sunlight and high humidity (above 60%). The potting medium must be highly aerated; a mix of orchid bark, perlite, and peat moss is far superior to standard desert cactus soil. Regular watering is key, but stagnation must be avoided.
Treating it like a desert cactus by letting it dry out completely for long periods is a frequent mistake that leads to root loss. Conversely, planting it in heavy, poorly draining potting soil will quickly trigger root rot. Dry indoor air can also cause stem shriveling and prevent successful flowering.
