Nagy's Melon Cactus
Melocactus nagyi is an extremely rare and critically endangered member of the Cactaceae family. It is highly prized for its unique 'cephalium'—a woolly, bristly structure that develops at the crown of mature specimens 1.
Originally described from the unique microclimates of Cuba, this species embodies the classic characteristics of the Melocactus genus. While some authorities debate its status relative to other Cuban endemics, it remains recognized for its specific spination and localized wild populations 2.
This species is strictly endemic to southeastern Cuba, thriving in coastal, seasonally dry tropical biomes. It typically grows on rocky limestone terraces and barren coastal cliffs where few other plants can survive.
It features a solitary, globose to shortly cylindrical dark green stem with sharp, well-defined ribs and stiff, greyish radial spines. Upon reaching maturity, vegetative growth ceases, and it produces a dense, reddish-orange woolly cephalium from which small pink flowers and subsequent club-shaped pink fruits emerge.
Cultivating Melocactus nagyi is a challenge. Unlike desert cacti, it cannot tolerate frost or prolonged cold temperatures, requiring a minimum of 12°C even in winter. It prefers high atmospheric humidity but demands an incredibly free-draining substrate.
The most frequent failures involve overwatering during the cooler winter months and attempting to repot mature specimens with developed cephalia. Their root systems are fragile and rarely recover from root disturbance.
