Typically growing as a solitary globose to short cylindrical stem, it features deep, well-defined ribs armed with sturdy, recurved spines. Upon reaching reproductive maturity, it develops a terminal, cylindrical cephalium composed of dense reddish-pink wool and bristles, from which tiny pink flowers emerge.
Cultivating this species requires experience. It demands full sun, superb air circulation, and a highly porous, purely mineral substrate. Unlike many other cacti, Melocactus cannot tolerate prolonged dry cold, requiring winter temperatures to remain above 10°C.
