Giant Prickly Pear
Opuntia maxima is a monumental, shrubby or tree-like cactus species belonging to the family Cactaceae. Commonly known as the giant prickly pear, it is highly appreciated for its imposing structural presence and extreme drought tolerance.
The genus name Opuntia refers to the ancient Greek city of Opus, where a spiny plant reportedly grew. The specific epithet maxima is Latin for "largest," pointing to the grand scale this succulent shrub can reach 1. It is closely related to Opuntia ficus-indica.
Presumed to be native to Mexico, Opuntia maxima has naturalized extensively across Mediterranean Europe, North Africa (including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya), Peru, and other dry subtropical zones 2. It thrives in deserts, dry shrublands, and degraded soils.
This species forms thick, fleshy, ovate to obovate green or grayish-green pads (cladodes). It can grow up to 4-5 meters tall. During late spring, it produces vibrant yellow to orange flowers, followed by edible, spiny, egg-shaped fruits.
It requires full sun exposure and performs best on south-facing balconies or open gardens. A highly porous, sandy, and gritty cactus soil is essential. Water only when the substrate is fully dry, and minimize irrigation in winter.
Overwatering and poorly draining soil are the main causes of root rot and plant demise. Insufficient sunlight leads to etiolation, where pads become weak, thin, and pale.
